Information systems are key to efforts to conserve and make the most of agricultural biodiversity. It’s important to know what livestock breeds and crop varieties are already safeguarded and where to find them, in order to direct further conservation expeditions and also for scientists and farmers to understand the diversity available. The new Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS), maintained and developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), allows users to monitor breed populations in 182 countries.
